• What we’ll do
This is a casual, scenic trip by Page, AZ, visiting the most scenic landmarks that this area has to offer! I want to be clear that this is NOT a hiking weekend. This is perfect if your goal is to discover new places, looking for a trip with the kids, or just want to leave the office behind and want to enjoy a leisurely time outdoors.
While hiking will be involved, it will be casual, slow paced, and limited. If you want to visit the famous and often photographed White Pockets, you will need a high clearance 4WD, or carpool with someone who has one. Otherwise there are plenty of other things to see in the area.
I will drive up Friday evening after work, and will either camp out, or grab a hotel. This will be your choice! If you stay in Page, you can meet us Saturday morning at a designated area. If you are camping, and you can head up early on Friday, you can grab a spot for the group. Please contact me if this is the YOU, and I’ll give you directions.
Saturday we would be meeting around/after 9.30 am (casual start)
Saturday we’ll visit Buckskin Gulch. While this can be a 21 mile hike, we’ll just wet our beaks and do ~3 miles RT (easy, flat walk with 1 down-climb we can get do a partner assist for everyone who wants to continue). Bring $6 cash per person for permit. This is as scenic as Antelope Canyon, except you can walk in on your own. We’ll probably turn around at the confluence, which will give you a nice feel of the towering 30+ foot walls and the narrow nature of the canyon.
We’ll have lunch somewhere along the way. Expect to bring snacks, sun protection, headlamp and 3 liters of water on your on each hike. A Camelbak is the most practical solution.
Later in the afternoon we’ll drive to Toad’s Stool to take some cool photos. This is a ~1.5 mile RT hike with scenic rock formations.
We return to the hotel/camp Saturday night (dinner plans may or may not be with group, depending on the size and plans).
Sunday we’ll visit the famous and photographic White Pocket (if people have 4×4, or at least a high clearance vehicle. My space is very limited!) While this is an only ~0.5 mi RT hike, this is a SUPER scenic part of this area, and is fantastic!!! You’ll have to log quite a few dirt road miles to get there, and if unlucky, there could be deep sand.
On our way home we’ll stop at Horseshoe Bend and take photos, which is again ~0.5 miles RT walk.
Then we’ll drive home to Phoenix. I’d like to be on the way home before dark, but definitely after the I-17 Zoo traffic.
Dogs are welcome, as long as they are well behaved, just note that they may not be able to hike down into the narrow section of Buckskin Gulch.
You are, of course, welcome to tag along and hike way into / through Buckskin Gulch (21 mi to White House) assuming you find a partner(s) to set up a shuttle with. You can just use the day hiking, and use this an excuse to come up and set up a trip.

• What to bring
For the dayhikes: bring snacks, lunch, sun protection, headlamp, electrolytes and 3 liters of water on your on each hike. A Camelbak is the most practical solution.
If you are camping: tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, 1-2 dinners (Friday night you can load up on your way), 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, + snacks. All your water for 2 days and 2 nights. Cleaning stuff, cooking stuff, firewood if you have space. Cash for the Buckskin permit. Weather looks high 70s / low 50s.
• Important to know
If you are camping, I would strongly recommend an SUV or something more capable for dirt roads than a passenger car.

Start your third April weekend off right by joining us for SoW’s first BYOB dinner! For this non-class event we will be at Merci, a family-run French restaurant in Scottsdale with one of the rare BYOB licenses in the Valley. Merci French Cafe (http://mercifrenchcafe.com/) offers great food and fabulous desserts in a casual setting.
We are still working on finalizing the menu with Merci*, but here are some details and a menu example:
1. Corkage fee is $8.00 per bottle.
2. Merci will do individual checks for us and gratuity will not automatically be added onto the bill. So the cost for the dinner will depend upon what you order.
3. Due to the size of our group, we will have a limited selection of menu choices so the kitchen staff does not get completely overwhelmed.
• French Onion Soup
• Caprese salad
• Organic hummus platter
• Roasted lamb in French herbs with mashed potatoes
• Beef bourguignon with tagliatelle
• Fresh salmon seared in creamy white wine sauce with vegetables
• Asparagus with pesto on linguine with shaved parmesan
* Menu options are examples at this time. Finalized options will be posted by April 13th.
This is a BYOB so please bring something tasty to share with the group. There is no official theme but French wine would be apropos. We look forward to seeing you at Merci for our first SoW BYOB event!

Let’s go climb! If you haven’t yet made it to a climbing day, never fear, here are a bunch more days you can come!
A day pass costs $15 but if you buy a week or a month pass its cheaper per day. If you need to rent shoes and a harness its an extra $5. If it is your first time there you will need to fill out some forms, watch a film, and get a lesson on how to belay. When everyone is all climbed out those who want can head across the street for a beer. Can’t wait to see you call there!

***LIVE COUNTRY BAND 9:00-1:00am***
Every night I begin the dance lessons with a few Line Dances, and then I’m going to try something new and teach AZ 2 STEP every Friday, along with Line Dances on the same night. This will enable me to get some challenge moves taught by the end of the class each week. We cater to beginners, but I’m always around if you need extra help. Singles and couple always welcome.
(I also offer private dance lessons. Contact me @ [masked] )
***Look for the red, white, and blue decorations on the table next to me, in front of the dance floor.***
